Quick answer

Combat is reactive melee built on four verbs — attack, block, parry and dodge — plus Sophia's tools: a dagger for stealth kills, a grapple that pulls or stuns, throwables and the environment. Growth comes from Heroes' Graves Blades, Charms and Resonance Points that unlock Skills and Masteries, and difficulty can be changed at any time, including a Narrative mode that parries and dodges for you.

The core combat loop

Focus's official materials frame the fighting as "fast, intense and instinctive melee swordplay". In practice that means reading an enemy's swing, answering with a block or a timed parry, punishing the opening with your own attacks, and dodging out of grabs. The system is deliberately legible — the developers describe fights that involve multiple enemies and boss encounters, where movement and repositioning matter as much as sword timing.

What keeps the loop from flattening out is the toolset around the sword. Sophia's grapple can drag an enemy to her or stun one at a distance, throwables interrupt from range, and ledges and spikes turn positioning into damage. Official copy is careful here: it supports describing light as "key to survival" against specific threats — not as a claim that every enemy melts to it.

Parry and dodge fundamentals

The parry is the skill the whole system hangs on, and the game puts an achievement on proving it: 'Untouchable' asks for six successful parries in a row, per the launch achievement list. In early fights, that is the number to chase — not because the game requires perfection, but because parries feed your offense and, later, your Focus meter, which powers the Focus Attack.

Dodging covers what blocking can't. The official devblog lists dodge as a first-class verb, and guide testing notes that Narrative mode's automatic dodge changes how some encounters play — one Corrupted-related grab condition reportedly becomes harder to set up with auto-dodge on. If a trophy demands a specific setup, toggling assists off for the attempt is the reported route.

Weapons and tools

Sophia's kit has four layers. The sword is the default answer in open fights. The dagger handles sneaky but deadly attacks — the official phrase — and stealth takedowns when you want to thin a group before it sees you. The grapple is a spacing tool: pull one enemy out of formation or stun them from a distance. Throwables and the environment finish the set, from stun setups to the push-offs the 'Overboard' achievement counts.

One guide-tested rule shapes how you use all of it: weapon switching is unavailable during combat in PowerPyx's launch testing. Blades are swapped from the Sophia > Blades menu between fights, so decide what the next encounter needs before it starts.

Blades and Heroes' Graves

Heroes' Graves are the game's optional combat shrines, and they reward Blades — eight in the base game, per guide testing. Two achievements revolve around them: collecting all of the Heroes' Graves Blades, and killing at least one enemy with each one. None of the eight are missable, and the chapter-select tracker helps you finish the set after the credits.

The Heritage Pack DLC adds a ninth weapon, officially named the Minoan Sword, whose documented effect triggers a powerful, stunning attack on every third hit; Alec's Pendant from the same pack raises Charm effects. Neither is required for any base-game achievement. One naming caution: some guides call the DLC blade 'Hero's Blade' — the official Steam page says Minoan Sword, so that is the name used here.

Skills, Masteries and Resonance Points

Growth runs on Resonance Points, which unlock Skills and Masteries — the achievement list confirms six Mastery branches exist. The binding rule is the same one the trophy guide tracks: 165 of the 200 Resonance Points must be collected within a single playthrough to finish the Mastery trees, because chapter select does not accumulate points across separate chapter runs.

The practical advice: spend your exploration budget on Resonance Points first. Charms and their bonuses ride along the way, and the sphere's light beam receives upgrades that also feed back into combat against the threats blades can't solve.

Focus Attack

The Focus Attack is the launch version's crowd-clearing signature move. Guide testing places its unlock in Chapter IV and describes the mechanic: a yellow Focus meter that fills as you parry and land Critical Strikes, then spends on an area attack. Its trophy line asks for four enemies killed with a single Focus Attack, which is the reference point for how strong a full meter is.

Inputs are only partially documented. PowerPyx records Triangle + Circle on PS5; the default PC and Xbox bindings have not been published in any official page we checked, so this guide lists them as pending rather than guessing at keys.

Light against special threats

Not everything on the island dies to steel. The official devblog's line — light is key to survival — pairs with guide-documented launch situations: Petrified enemies that light can destroy, Corrupted foes and their Puppets that change fight rules, and Light Concentrate setups that turn the sphere into a weapon. These are guide-tested descriptions of shipped situations, not an official bestiary, so treat them as orientation rather than a complete enemy list.

Difficulty and assistance

Difficulty can be changed during the game, which makes the five difficulty levels low-stakes to experiment with. The official accessibility article also documents a Narrative assistance mode with automatic parry and dodge, a more aggressive Nightmare setting, and a separate Invincible Mode that can be toggled on or off independently.

The official page uses two naming sets — prose says Narrative and Nightmare, while its feature table lists Story / Easy / Normal / Hard / Very Hard — and the complete final five-name list is unresolved. Functionally, though, the tools are clear: play at whatever level feels right, dial assists in or out per fight, and combine Nightmare with Invincible Mode if a specific trophy needs the reported workaround.

Combat questions still open

A few system details have no official documentation yet. They are logged below; when patch notes or official pages answer them, the relevant sections above will be updated in place.

Frequently asked questions

How does combat work in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy?

It is reactive melee. The official frame is fast, instinctive swordplay built on attack, block, parry and dodge, layered with Sophia's own tools — a dagger for stealth takedowns, a grapple that pulls or stuns, throwables and the environment. Fights range from small skirmishes to multi-enemy and boss encounters.

When does Focus Attack unlock?

Guide testing places the Focus Attack unlock in Chapter IV. It requires a full yellow Focus meter, which parries and Critical Strikes build. The guide records Triangle + Circle on PS5; the PC and Xbox inputs have not been officially documented, so we don't list them.

Can you switch weapons during combat?

Per PowerPyx's launch guide testing, no — blades are changed from the Sophia > Blades menu outside of combat. Pick your blade before an engagement, especially for the blade-specific achievement kills.

How many difficulty settings are there?

The official accessibility article describes five difficulty levels that can be changed during the game, plus a Narrative assistance mode with automatic parry and dodge and a separately toggleable Invincible Mode. The final English names of all five levels are not published consistently, so we avoid listing them as confirmed.

Do I need the DLC weapon for combat achievements?

No. The Heritage Pack's Minoan Sword is not required for any base-game achievement or trophy requirement, and the base game's eight Heroes' Graves Blades cover every blade-related goal.
